Just finished is the sweetest Nautical New quilt in the Throw size! This quilt pattern is quick and easy using 10" layer cake squares.
I recently stated a goal of remaking a quilt in one of my patterns each month. It's a lofty goal (and in all likelihood quite unrealistic), but so far July was on time, August was a week late, and this quilt, September's quilt, landed smack in the middle of September! October's project is already selected and waiting her turn. :)
Nautical News is a simple quilt pattern that is precut friendly and includes all of the sizes, so you will use it again and again.
The Nautical News quilt pattern
Nautical News is a quick and easy quilt pattern that lends itself well to any style of fabric. It works perfectly for modern, Americana, old-fashioned, primitive, and children's prints. It's perfect for your stash of scraps, yardage, or precuts.
Tons of Quilt Sizes
The quilt pattern includes six sizes and uses the following number of 10" squares:
- Baby 9
- Lap 20
- Throw 24
- Twin 35
- Queen 64
- King 72
This quilt is a Throw quilt, but it's made using the Twin instructions in the quilt pattern with the outer border left off. This utilizes almost the entire stack of 10" layer cake squares. Since I didn't have a fabric for a wide border that matches the layer cake squares, this was a great option for this quilt. In addition, leaving off the wide border also leans toward a more modern quilt design.
Those Sweet Fabrics!
The beautiful fabrics are Sweet Picnic by Riley Blake Designs. Oh, my! I couldn't resist this fabric collection when I saw it this past spring, and you will be seeing a number of upcoming quilt patterns made with it. We also loved it so much that we have stocked inventory for quilt kits, and Nautical News is one of our patterns that is kitted with Sweet Picnic.
The Nautical News quilt kit in Sweet Picnic is the Throw size and is available in our shop.
Sweet Picnic is a lovely mix of orangey-reds, deep purples, lavender, minty aqua, gold, and cream; with large, medium, and small florals, ginghams, and tone-on-tones.
The backing and binding on this quilt are also from the Sweet Picnic fabric collection.
Layer Cake Friendly
This pattern is perfect for using 10" layer cake squares, larger scraps or even yardage. Just cut the number and sizes of pieces indicated in the pattern.
This quilt pattern would look amazing entirely scrappy with different fabrics in every spot in the blocks. Oh, that must get on my to-do list with some fun Tula Pink fabrics I have on hand!
A Modern Layout
The quilt looks entirely different when only one end is pictured and the other colorways are hidden!
The 10" squares are grouped according to colorway in this layout. It seemed more soothing and serene and resulted in a more modern quilt in this manner rather than random placement.
The digital quilting design is Ribbon Curls, one of my favorite designs. I love the curls on straight lines of quilts. Natural white thread was used on my HandiQuilter Fusion with Pro-Stitcher.
The Mister is learning how to run the longarm quilting machine, and this quilt was the first in his training. :)
Nautical News is one of the first patterns written for my pattern collection; it's from 2017 and is still popular today. It definitely checks all of the boxes - quick, easy, precut friendly, multiple sizes, and very pleasing to look at. The repeated symmetry is soothing. It's also versatile. You can leave off the sashing between the blocks for a different look, or omit the wide outer border as I did in this quilt for a different look.
This quilt is the Throw size, but it's made with the Twin size instructions in order to use most of the 10" layer cake, omitting the outer border.
We love this quilt so much that we want you to be able to make one, too! The Nautical News quilt kit in Sweet Picnic is the Throw size and is available in our shop. Because we're just a small mom and pop shop, we have limited quantities of all quilt kits that we curate for you.
